Harvest and the gathering in of the fruits of the earth, features in all countries worldwide, and it is a time for gathering by animals and birds as well as human beings. It was this fact which was not lost on Emma Bossons.
A harvest mouse peers cautiously from the relative safety of an ear of corn. Fields have already been ploughed in readiness for sowing new crops while smoke from the chimney of a small cottage drifts without effort or sound into the sky. There is so much which can be said about harvest time, but for me the whole of the natural world is involved in a ritual process of gathering and preparation even the humble harvest mouse. Apart from a few stray ears of corn, the human harvest is complete. The little harvest mouse knows that. He is still busy, although perhaps nervous at the sound of a tractor ploughing the stubble. Under a hedgerow at the edge of the field, small white flowers cling to life before the onslaught of winter, while in the distance, a smoking chimney on a farm cottage also suggests that the cold months are not far away.
