In 2009, Collectors all over the world expressed their pleasure at Kerry Goodwin’s Wood Nymph vase by causing a total sell-through before the New Year was even two months old. To build on the success, and to perfect the idea, Kerry set to work on Oak Nymph on the 121/10 shape. The nymphs are the trunks and branches of these ancient trees, all joined as if in some dance together.
As a model the design works even better. At a distance, the model appears to be a ceramic version of an oak bonsai tree, haunting in its size and structure alone. On closer inspection, Robert Tabbenor’s nymphs twist seductively, leaving true lovers of the applied arts to ponder on whether the model is more human in form than plant.
Interestingly, oak means ‘door’ in many ancient languages, and throughout history, the oak tree has inspired poets, artists and authors to use its structure in self-expression. Even beyond Greek Mythology, the oak was held sacred by ancient Hebrews with significant religious connotations. Abraham saw his angels under an oak tree. Jacob buried the idol of Shechem under an oak. The oak in Shechem made Abimelech king. Isaiah said that idols were made of oak. The angel who gave Gideon his orders sat under the oak of Ophra. This model can only grow on you as the years pass by. It will reveal its secrets to you as you grow in wisdom.
