Designer: Paul Hilditch

Travelling from India and the world of imagination to the realities of the American mid-west, designer, Paul Hilditch, found mustangs stampeding across the Navajo reservation in Monument Valley. Situated on the border of Utah and Arizona, the colour and rock formations are familiar to all who enjoy cowboy movies.

For Paul, however, the memory is of the dust driven into the air by the pounding hooves of the horses. In one moment there was pure silence with shimmering heat hammering on the red rocks of Monument Valley. In the next moment, the silence was shattered by the galloping horses first not unlike distant drums and then as loud as thunder. It was an awe inspiring moment and one which I am never likely to experience again. The great thing about ceramic art is that you can preserve these images for ever.
